CG is a pregnancy hormone that is a glycoprotein and consists of 2 units – alpha and beta (it is also often found in the blood). The beta subunit reflects the development of the embryo, and its level indicates the presence of chromosomal abnormalities in the embryo. Excessive levels of this subunit indicate the presence of Down Syndrome in the child.
Gonadotropin itself is produced by chorion cells. So HC blood test can detect pregnancy and diagnose it at an early stage.
Gonadotropin helps increase the production of hormones such as estrogen and progesterone, which help to maintain the pregnancy.
Chorionic gonadotropin stimulates the production of progesterone before the placenta forms (this is the first two months of pregnancy). It also ensures the preservation of the corpus luteum and has a positive effect on the development of the placenta.
In addition, this hormone has corticotropic features, it activates the production of testosterone by the gonads of the embryo and affects the fetal adrenal cortex.
Gonadotropin levels allow us to monitor the progress of pregnancy and detect the presence of any complications in time.
In non-pregnant women, gonadotropin is not present in the body, but various malignant tumors can produce it.
